Y4 Musical Activities

Hi there guys,

We are going to be learning about musical notation. You will be writing your own four bar rhythm and playing it but first, we need to explore the basics of notation and the durations of different musical notes.

Week 1

Watch these short videos on the different durations of notes and see if you can copy everything onto your own piece of blank paper or whiteboard…(you can pause and catch up, if you need to)

Notation 1

Notation 2

Week 2

I hope that you enjoyed the first two notation videos. This week we will be looking at how to use our notes and write them into musical bars. Once again, see if you can copy the video onto your own sheet or whiteboard. For Q3, the end of the video got lost so you can just make up your own 4/4 rhythms.

Notation 3

Week 3

This week we are going to be putting together everything that we have learned so far. We will be writing and reading a four bar rhythm. Just as before, try and copy everything onto your own sheet or whiteboard.

Week 4 & 5 & 6

We are now going to use everything that we have learnt in the last few weeks to write our own four bar rhythms and play them on a piano.

Click on the Notation sheet below and it should open up the document in a new tab for you where you should be able to print from your device. Alternatively, you could screen shot the picture of the worksheet below and then draw on it directly with your device either by editing it in your photo album or by opening it in a separate editing app.

Further down the page, there is a picture of the same sheet that I have done showing you an example of what to do. It’s really easy, just choose four rhythms from the thirty I have made you and write them onto the musical stave. I’ve drawn coloured lines to show you where mine came from. (I did a screenshot and wrote in my notation and coloured lines all on my device by zooming in with my fingers and editing.)

There is also a short video on how to play the rhythm with the online piano.
